Hairstyles for short locks

Hi everyone! I know that short locks can be a pain. When I was first starting out, I found it very difficult to style my hair. I even used to wear a tam! Eventually I found some styles that worked for me. Here are 5 hairstyles for short locs.

1. Bantu knots with back down

This is perfect for short and medium length locks. I would part the front of my hair into small sections, then with one section at a time, twist the locks around until they formed the desired shape. You can also choose to leave some locks at the front out, to frame your face. If you’re unfamiliar with bantu knots, view here.

2. Curled locks

This is one of my favourite styles since it is so versatile. You can do tight curls like the ones I have here or you can elongate them to create a more ringlet-like look. Either way, you’ll only need flexi rods or curling rods.

Tip: spray your locks with water, or better yet our Rose water Revitalizing Spray, before putting in the rods, and leave them in until they are fully dry. This is the best way to avoid using setting spray or setting lotion, which could cause build up in your locks.

3. Updo with a curly side bang

This style is a bit complex, but it gives you an idea of the realm of possibilities available with plaiting your locks. I went to a hairdresser who plaits natural hair with an idea, wanting to know if it was possible for locks. At the time, I was hesitant because I hadn’t yet realized how versatile sisterlocks were. To my surprise, she didn’t even hesitate and did it in 20 minutes. The front of my hair was plait back, while the back was plait up. The ends were then tucked in. She added a little flair and put the front in flexi rods to create a curly side bang.

4. Pulled back with a clip

I would do the front of my hair in a flat twist style. Then I would lift the rest to fit it all into a clip that would hold everything together. This photo was taken soon after my sisterlocks installation. I did the flat twist with a less tight roll, since I didn’t want it pulling too much on my scalp so early in the locking process.

Tip: use a needle and thread to sew down the hair that sticks out. I know this might seem a little crazy but it works! Just ensure that you aren’t piercing the actual locks but sewing around them, and don’t do it too tightly.

5. Updo with front down

I would plait the back of my hair upwards, creating one braid. Then I would leave the front out, with a middle part. A lot of styles focus on leaving the back down, so this can be a nice change of pace.

Hi I’m in the Atlanta area and need to find someone to work with! I’m 68and tired of the weave. I’m really considering the micro sister locks in a short style. Any suggestions?
