Have you ever accidentally damaged your locks? I have. My hair dying experience did not go well. For the full story read Hair colouring disaster? The time I dyed my locks blue and purple. I lost a lot of growth and it was heart-breaking! So I had to find a way to repair my locks. Here’s my regimen for how to regain healthy locs over the course of about 4 months.
1st wash:
Before I washed my hair, I would do a hot oil treatment with a heat cap.
Ingredients:
- Jojoba oil – 1/3 cup
- Coconut oil – 1/3 cup
- Avocado oil – 1/3 cup
- Peppermint oil – 5 drops
- Rosemary oil – 5 drops
I already had peppermint and rosemary oil from a local beauty supply store. Therefore, I only had to buy the remaining 3 and a heat cap – see the links below.

This mixture was only applied to my scalp. I left it on for 45 minutes to 1 hour, with the heat cap on the highest setting. Then, I turned the heat to low for 15 minutes, before taking it off and going to wash my hair.
I washed with the sisterlocks tea tree oil shampoo and then applied the sisterlocks reconstructor to the locks themselves. (For those who don’t use sisterlocks products, any good clarifying shampoo and protein treatment can work.) I used the heat cap once again for 10 minutes on the highest setting before washing out the reconstructor.
Afterwards, I dried off the excess water with a towel. Then, I got a spray bottle and sprayed my locks with a mixture of the sisterlocks moisture treatment and water. (If you don’t use sisterlocks products, any leave-in conditioner can work – I’ve used the crème of nature products before.) The amounts depend on how much of the spray you need, so just ensure that it has a very liquid consistency. After spraying my locks thoroughly with this, I just let it air dry.
2nd wash:
The next time I washed my hair ( 2 weeks later), I did not do the hot oil treatment.
After shampooing my locs, I used the sisterlocks moisture treatment with a heat cap. I turned it to the highest setting, and left it on for about 15 minutes. I would apply it to my scalp as well as the locks themselves. Next, I rinsed out my hair with hot water, and gradually brought the temperature down to cold.
Afterwards, I dried off the excess water with a towel. Then, I would apply oil to the locks. I used the same oil blend mentioned in the 1st wash, but mixed with more jojoba oil. Depending on how much I needed to lightly coat my hair, I used:
- ½ oil blend
- ½ jojoba oil
Then I left my hair to air dry.
Alternate between the 1st and 2nd wash regimen:
Repeat these processes every time you wash your hair. I know it seems like a long process but it’s definitely worth it. While you have the heat cap on, you can use this time to study or work or clean; anything you need to do. The time will pass very quickly. Also, note that during this time, I wore protective styles, sometimes even a wig. I also did a scalp massage twice a week, using the same oil blend.
I also now use our Rose water Revitalizing Spray as my daily moisturizer, which promotes hair growth by stimulating the hair follicles.
After all this intense dedication, I was able to get my healthy locs back.
DISCLAIMER: Persons with beginner locks should not try this healthy locs regimen. The usage of oils might cause slippage.

Hi,
I don’t think my Locs are damaged but could this regime be used as just a ‘health boost’ to my Locs?
For sure! It’s a bit extreme to do this for 4 months though so for a health boost you definitely won’t have to do it that long
Thank you for your advice.
You’re welcome!
