For the majority of my life I have lived in a tropical country, so I never had to worry about winter before. However, a few years ago I moved to Canada, a country with very harsh winters. Not only was it a shock for me, it was a shock for my hair! During my first winter, my locks became extremely dry and brittle. I didn’t realize how bad my locks were until it was too late. So I thought to myself, I should probably write about this and try to save some people from what I experienced. Here are my 6 essential haircare tips for ‘winter dreads’.
1. If you wash your hair more than once every two weeks, stop washing your hair so often.
This actually strips your locks of the moisture they need. During winter I usually wash my hair every three weeks. I freshen it up with spritzes of our Rose water Revitalizing Spray. You can even use dry shampoo. Doing this, I’ve never had to worry about the smell of my locks.
2. Do a deep condition/moisture treatment every time you wash your hair.
This might seem like overkill; but if you have harsh winters like the ones in Canada, your locks will be begging you for it. Trust me! If your winters aren’t that bad, you can probably get away with doing this every other wash day.
3. Use a protein treatment every 2 months.
While moisture is extremely important for locks, and hair in general; with constant moisture treatments, your hair can actually become weak from lack of protein. When I was first trying to heal my hair, I thought that moisture was all it needed. However, while I was drowning my locks with moisturizing products, they were still breaking. That’s when I saw something online about hair protein. I started using the sisterlocks reconstructor, which is essentially a protein treatment, and after two times I felt the difference. So don’t forget that hair needs protein as well!
For both the moisture treatment and protein treatment, I use this heat cap.

4. After washing your locks, always use a leave-in conditioner.
There are many non-expensive brands out there. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be a labelled “leave-in conditioner”. I apply our Peppermint Rose Hair Oil as my leave-in conditioner. Whichever method you use, just be sure to apply it after washing, in order to seal in the moisture. This also acts as a layer of protection against the elements.
5. Spritz your hair daily, before going outside.
There are many ready-made sprays to choose from. I used to use just normal water as a base, but at the recommendation of my old loctician, I started using rose water. Best decision I ever made! As mentioned before, the brand I use is our Rose water Revitalizing Spray, which not only has all the moisturizing properties of rose water but also helps with dry scalp and dandruff and promotes hair growth.
6. Wear hats or scarves on your head when you’re outside.
The cold winds can be very damaging so try to protect your hair as much as you can. Invest in one or two high quality hats or scarves. Anyone who knows me knows that I love a bargain; but the cheap ones will not save your hair from the elements. However, if you don’t have the money to spare, wrap your locks in a cheap scarf, then put on a hat, and wear your winter jacket with the hood up. The layering will act as protection for your locks.
Until next time!
