Hi everyone! One of the questions that people keep asking me is why locs; why did I start this journey in the first place? So I decided to get a little more personal and write a post about why locs were for me.
Watch the video or read the text below.
- So first and foremost, the main reason I got locks is sheer laziness lol. When you ask people, they love to spout all this goodness about appreciating natural black beauty, etc. Don’t get me wrong, that’s great and all; but the reality for me was that locks provided a way to wake up, run my hands through my hair and leave. Absolutely no effort needed.
- The second reason I got locks was due to me being tired of products leaving my hands and clothes greasy. In order to get soft curls instead of the crunchy starched ones, I had to use lots of curl activators and curling creams. Even with texturized hair I had to do this every morning. And the worst part is that it never looked good for the entire day.
- Thirdly, my edges were starting to thin from my hair being pulled in one all the time. That was one of the few ways I knew, to keep my hair neat and off of my face. I’ll have to do a post on how I fixed that, but I had 2 big hairless spots on my temples five years ago and I hated it. I knew I needed a change.
- Even though I wanted to change my look, I still wanted the versatility of being able to style my hair when I wanted to. All of this made locks, and specifically sisterlocks, the best choice for me.
- In the end, it also helped me to overcome the insecurity and social pressure that I faced concerning my hair. When you’re black, having ‘good hair’ (ie. loosely curled hair) is the hope of every girl and I was no exception. It was only after about a year of sisterlocks that I realized I was finally content with my appearance. Sisterlocks just felt like me.🤷🏾♀️
To this day, I have no regrets about my locks journey.
I hope you guys enjoyed this more informal post. Feel free to tell me never to do it again.😂
Until next time!
